Created and launched in 2002, Second Sunday on Main is a true arts-based community development project. After a difficult summer in 2001, followed by the devastating effects of 9/11, Main Street in Over-the-Rhine (OTR) was struggling.
Cincinnatians were feeling fearful and reluctant to visit OTR’s once vibrant entertainment district. Melody Sawyer Richardson and Joan Kaup collaborated with the OTR Foundation and OTR Chamber of Commerce to create an event that would motivate people to overcome their hesitation and return to Main Street.
What looks like a street festival is in fact is an economic initiative for the Main Street Business District, administered by the OTR Chamber of Commerce. Now in its sixth year, Second Sunday on Main continues to embrace creative commerce and entrepreneurship. When the economics of a community are strong, the people are stronger; pride and hospitality become contagious.
Cincinnati’s hip, free, family friendly festival and street fair entertains with outstanding local music. Main Street is closed to vehicular traffic. Guest celebrity chefs stop by with cooking tips and samples of gourmet delights, The shops, galleries and restaurants are open. Sidewalks are lined with artists, vendors and the Christian Moerlein beer booth. Enjoyable and educational planned activities for children are available. The general public is aware of the event and people come to see what the buzz is about.
By working together, the OTR Foundation, the OTR Chamber of Commerce, Merchants of Main, area churches, arts organizations, established merchants, visual and performing artists, residents and emerging entrepreneurs are reclaiming this historic neighborhood, establishing a positive environment for artists and other residents.
Joan continues to offer strategic counsel to the OTR Chamber of Commerce, the co-chairs and committees. Second Sunday on Main to continues to:
- Encourage development of small businesses.
- Foster profitability for merchants in the long term.
- Give residents pride in their neighborhood and empower them to take responsibility for its success.
- Draw positive regional attention to OTR.
- Bring together a diverse collaboration of social, economic and artistic groups who work together toward a common goal.
